Lok is a Sanskrit term meaning "world" or "a particular division of the Universe."
The most common division of the universe in Hinduism is the Trailokya (tri-lok): Heaven (Swarg), Earth (Martya) and Netherworld (Patal)
In the Puranas and the Atharvaveda, there are 14 worlds are enumerated: 7 above the earth (Vyahrtis) and 7 below (Pฤtฤlas)
14 Lokas: (7 Upper)
1.Satya-Lok (Brahma-Lok)
2.Tapa-Lok
3.Jana-Lok
4.Mahar-Lok
5.Svar-Lok (Svarga-Loka)
6.Bhuvar-Lok
7.Bhu-Lok
(7 Lower)
8.Atala-lok
9.Vitala-lok
10. Sutala-lok
11.Talatala-lok
12. Mahatala-lok
13. Rasatala-lok
14. Patala-lok
The Earth is thought to be the lowest of the seven higher worlds. The other higher worlds are home to Brahma, the sons of Brahma, other gods andgoddesses, rishis, sages and the sun. The seven lower worlds are home mostly to demons and foes.
The world that humans currently live in is called bhu-lok, the root, associated with the muladhara (root) chakra.The 7 Vyahrtis (Heavens or Upperworlds):
1 Satya-Lok: Brahma’s Lok or Satya-Lok planetary system is not eternal. Abode of Truth or of Brahma, where atman are released from the necessity of rebirth.
2 Tapa-Lok : Abode of tapas or of other deities. Ayohnija Devadas live here.
3 -Jana-Lok : Abode of the sons of God Brahma.
4 -Mahar-Lok : The abode of great sages and enlightened beings like Markendeya and other rishis.
5 -Svar-Lok : Region between the sun and polar star, the heaven of the god Indra. where all the 33 Koti Hindu gods (Deva)reside along with the king of gods, Indra.
6 - Bhuvar-Lok (Pitri Loka): Sun, planets, stars. Space between earth and the sun, inhabited by semi-divine beings. It is a real region, the atmosphere, the life-force.
7- Bhur-Lok: The Vishnu Purana says that the earth is merely one of the thousands of billions of inhabited worlds like itself to be found in the universe.
The 7 Patalas (Netherworld ):
1- Atala-Lok: Atala is ruled by Bala – a son of Maya – who possesses mystical powers.
2 Vitala-Lok: Vitala is ruled by the god Hara-Bhava – a form of Shiva, The residents of this realm are adorned with gold from this region.3- Sutala-Lok : Sutala is the kingdom of the pious demon king Bali.
4- Talatala-Lok : Talฤtala is the realm of the demon-architect Maya. Shiva, as Tripurantaka, destroyed the 3 cities of Maya but was later pleased with Maya and gave him this realm and promised to protect him.
5 -Rasatala-Lok : Rasฤtala is the home of the demons-Danavas and Daityas, who are mighty but cruel. They are the eternal foes of Devas (the gods). They live in holes like serpents.
6- Mahatala-Lok : Mahฤtala is the abode of many-hooded Nagas (serpents)
7- Patala-Loka: The lowest realm is called Patala or Nagaloka, the region of the Nagas, ruled by Vasuki. Here live several Nagas with many hoods. Each of their hood is decorated by a jewel, whose light illuminates this realm.
